Here Comes October!
A beautiful time in many parts of the country. And in various parts of the world, the vibrant hues of Autumn seem endless. As the one saying goes, it’s the time when “the trees teach us a thing or two about letting go”. In some areas, the sights are absolutely refreshing to behold!
Along with the beauty, however, October comes with a bit of trepidation due to the ramped-up attention to breast cancer awareness. This of course is a great cause, with the many reminders to be vigilant about self-checks and check-ups, but for some, it’s a time of the year where anxiety is also high.
Why So Anxious?
This is totally understandable, especially if you’re one of many still walking around feeling mutilated and wondering if looking in the mirror will ever feel the same again. The ones with flashbacks to a time when being numbed was the best form of self-protection.
Yes, pink ribbons, trinkets, and marches are significant to the noble cause of raising awareness and finding funding, and for this, you are forever grateful. It does not, unfortunately, eliminate the ongoing worry and fear of the wounded that are feeling like partially healed soldiers, fresh from war.
To you, this time of year feels more sobering than celebratory because you’re reminded that you were spared and can thus keep fighting. Much has been accomplished in the field of research and treatments, but much is left to be done. Especially in the case of targeted treatment options for triple-negative breast cancer.
We Still Need Octobers
Hope lives and the fight go on. Awareness and support are key! Octobers come and go but so does every month. So reminders for all to –get familiar with their bodies,- by doing self-checks on the first of each month and to be your own best advocate, must continue. And now that every year counts so much more than before, try to remember to count the little blessing even more.
Yes, a daily attitude of gratitude builds on the ‘faith muscle’ and makes for a more tolerable journey which adds to your joy. Practice it regularly and grow to appreciate the beautiful colors of Autumn and October, including pink, and try to look to the season with anticipated joy.
